Robert Raths and Sofia Ilyas of Erased Tapes Records discuss the visual aesthetic of the label on the occasion of its fifth anniversary. Existing in one of those fiendishly mutable spaces between electronic and contemporary classical music, Erased Tapes Records have built their reputation on attention to detail. Their's is an imprint where the artwork (and more bluntly put, the packaging) of their records plays a crucial role in the identity of each release, from the live-to-music painting which inspired the recent Lubomyr Melnyk LP to the 7" puck and micro-fibre cloth that accompany their stunning, limited edition 5th anniversary boxset. Home to the likes of Nils Frahm (who is preparing to perform at the St John Sessions later this month), Peter Broderick and Ólafur Arnalds, the Anglo-German label is approaching its first major milestone with a unified vision, drawn from an array of inspirations from Mati Klarwein to Kraftwerk. We visited Robert and Sofia in their spotless London HQ to find out more. To find out more about their forthcoming releases, visit www.erasedtapes.com.
Founded back in 2007 by Robert Raths, Erased Tapes Records has developed into a melting pot for innovative musicians from around the world, embracing both digital and traditional means of releasing music. That is, the London-based contemporary label is widely recognised for their avant-garde musicians that span across various genres and styles. The label’s portfolio of contemporary yet classical composers includes no other than Ólafur Arnalds from Iceland, German composer Nils Frahm, music pioneer Lubomyr Melnyk and multi-instrumentalist Peter Broderick amongst others.
'The heart-string-tugging London label that floats gently between 20th century composition and ambient music.'
